Job Summary:
The Technical Writer Specialist develops maintenance manuals and related data for complex electronic, mechanical and/or hydraulic products, and usually coordinates outsourcing of such tasks to approved vendors. Operates as a project and peer leader within the Technical Publications team. Typical subject matter includes product descriptions and theory of operation, testing and maintenance procedures, and illustrated parts lists.
Essential Functions:
- Perform successfully in a dynamic team environment while coordinating multiple tasks with changing priorities and schedule pressures
- Lead projects and other team members as needed on project deliverables
- Independently collect and interpret product design and manufacturing documentation. Identify gaps and interview subject matter experts as needed
- Write product descriptions and maintenance procedures, and prepare related illustrations, by adapting existing information or by developing new content through independent analysis of source data
- Coordinate the outsourcing of tech pubs document preparation tasks to vendors, as directed by the tech pubs supervisor or manager. Prepare data preparation instructions and schedules, provide relevant product design data, review delivered documents, provide feedback and/or make corrections as applicable
- Schedule and track the development of all assigned tech pubs deliverables using the designated task management tool(s). Identify and elevate delays caused by subject matter experts or vendors
- Collaborate effectively with diverse individuals and product teams from a wide variety of internal and external groups
- Coordinate with Engineering and R&O to request support for technical content development, tech pubs document reviews, and shop verification
- Support and attend engineering working group meetings, presentations, customer audits, and formal design reviews as assigned
- Use and enforce established standards for maintenance documentation and illustrations to produce material that complies with format, content and regulatory requirements
- Exhibit strong detail orientation and technical accuracy, balanced with high productivity
- Satisfy budget and schedule commitments
- Review customer documents to identify and understand deliverable data requirements for assigned programs
- Prepare data development cost estimates, documenting contractual deviations or other assumptions used as the basis for the quote, and identifying risk areas
- Support or coordinate the periodic review of new or revised Engineering data to determine impact on CMMs or related tech pubs deliverables
- Guide or assist with the activities of junior writers or vendor staff as assigned
- Plan and carry out assignments with a minimal level of direction and supervision
- Any other task assigned by your supervisor or management

- Be willing to shift core office hours, or work from home, to support time-critical direct communication with offshore resources.
- Experience in using both FrameMaker and MS Office applications is very desirable.

Salary Range: 104,328 - 128,008. Several factors contribute to actual salary, including experience in a similar role or performing comparable job responsibilities, skills, training, and other qualifications. Some roles may be eligible for participation in performance-based bonus programs.
